Students included in campus-wide United Way fundraising drive
Students included in campus-wide United Way fundraising drive
Date 10/1/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsFor the first time, Luther students will be able to contribute to the Winneshiek County United Way as part of a campus-wide campaign which starts today and lasts through Nov. 30. Students can expect contribution brochures in their SPOs tomorrow.
Don Kemp, associate professor emeritus of social work and campus coordinator for the United Way, said students are being included in a drive which formerly included only Luther faculty and staff.
"One reason we decided to do this is because Luther students are members of the wider community, both through their involvement with internships and with volunteer opportunities," said Kemp.
According to Kemp, the Winneshiek County United Way serves as a unified collection point for 17 health and human service agencies which include: Helping Services of Northeastern Iowa, Spectrum Industries, Opportunity Homes and Toys go 'Round, all of whom have some affiliation with the college.
Luther's student representatives are Ana Olson ('99) and Elise Cox ('99). Both Cox and Olson are members of APO, Luther's coed service fraternity, and are members of the Winneshiek County United Way Board of Directors.
"I would like to see a good majority of the Luther population informed about United Way, if nothing else," said Olson. Olson hopes students will respond positively to the fundraising drive.
"In some ways it's a very quiet organization," said Olson. "They're not really in your face, which is one of the reasons why I'm involved."
Cox and Olson started working with United Way last April. Cox said most students do not know how the United Way works and the impact it has on the community level.
"There are a lot of organizations that come to us for funding," said Cox. "It's amazing how much money can be raised with people working together."
David Sallee, vice president for enrollment management, is currently chairperson for the Winneshiek County United Way, and last year President Baker was an honorary chair for the county campaign. This year's goal for the fundraising drive is $75,000.
