Funds Mutual Vanguard Precious open spaces have been preserved all over New Jersey, thanks to the hard work, innovative ideas and selfless service of many land conservation trailblazers. These individuals, and their stories and contributions, are as diverse as the ecology of our State. As this generation of trailblazers moves into their golden years, they are leaving the rest of us a living legacy. Here is one individuals conservation story.

Dreyfus Strategic Municipals, Inc. (the Fund) end management investment company. The Fund's investment objective is to maximize current income exempt from federal income tax to the extent believed by the Fund's investment adviser to be consistent with the preservation of capital. Under normal market conditions, the fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in municipal obligations. Generally, the fund invests at least 50% grade or the unrated equivalent as determined by Dreyfus.

Funds Mutual Top Dr. David Johnson Reisner became an active land conservationist volunteer in 1970, and served as president of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation from 1973-75. He passed away in Vermont this past February at the age of 85.

Fidelity Funds Mutual Following the war, he counseled veterans in Columbia Universitys admissions office, and began working toward medical school. With just a semester of science and math courses at Wesleyan and summer school at Columbia, he persuaded the N.Y. State Commissioner of Education that he would qualify for a pre-medical course requirement certificate, and successfully entered Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons in September 1946.

Funds Investment Dr. Reisner became involved in land preservation in 1967 when a developer showed interest in a 77-acre natural area along the Dismal and Harmony Brooks in Mendham Township in Morris County.

Funds Retirement Dr. Reisner organized his neighbors to raise a deposit to buy the land, which became the first property acquired through New Jerseys new Green Acres program! Today, that land is part of the 146-acre Dismal-Harmony Natural Area, in the Highlands region.

Funds Trust The then-North Jersey Conservation Foundation (NJCF) acted as the conduit for the transaction. Dr. Reisner convinced the Board of Trustees that this was the next great opportunity for preservation they were seeking. NJCF was fresh off of their first success establishment of the Great Swamp Wildlife Area on land that had been proposed for an international jetport.

Closed End Funds After closing the books on the Dismal-Harmony project, the North Jersey Conservation Foundation was left with roughly $18,000 as the foundation of a revolving land fund for additional purchases. Over the past 35+ years that fund has helped save over 175,000 acres!

Funds Ohio Unclaimed Another of Dr. Reisners innovations was to encourage businesses and corporations as partners for environmental preservation. Industry was generally seen as the problem at the time, but Dr. Reisner argued that businesses especially local employers had a vested interest in raising the quality of life of their employees by improving the environment.

Aim Funds Much of what is standard practice for NJCF and other land trusts today is thanks to Dr. David Johnson Reisners creativity. The full impact of his legacy is felt in the wonderful land he helped preserve; but his legacy runs through every special place saved with the help of a corporate contribution or revolving land fund.
